For advanced functionality such as printer status and maintenance features, use the <a href="http://hplipopensource.com/"> HPLIP driver</a> (which includes HPIJS). <p> This printer is functionally equivalent to the normal HP DeskJet, except for the optional font cartridges (I think) (which don't add anything, but also don't hurt anything). Mine works.
